Naturopathic History
Naturopathic Medicine has quite a colorful past. It traces its recent roots to the European Nature Cure movement of the 1800's. Leaders in this form of healing included Vincenz Priessnitz, Louis Kuhne, and Father Sebastian Kneipp in Germany, Johannes Schroth in Austria, and Arnold Rikli in Switzerland, among many others. In the USA, prominent N.D./M.D.s included Benedict Lust, James Jackson, John Kellog, Henry Lindlahr, John H. Tilden, R.T. Trall, Samuel Thompson. They pioneered modern western forms of hydrotherapy, herbalism, sunbathing, and concepts such as "toxemia" and "enervation". The idea of "detoxification" is deeply tied to the roots of Naturopathic medicine. |
